The Academy Public Elementary School was situated in Church street in Portadown. The School belonged to the First Presbyterian Church and was located next door. it is now used by the Church youth groups and Sunday Schools.
Don Stevenson was the headmaster of the School when it closed in 1935. It’s pupils transferred to Church Street Primary School and Sir Robert Hart Memorial Primary School.
When Don Stevenson was headmaster he formed a boys football team. One of Portadowns most famous footballers, Davy Cochrane, played for the school team. He went on to play full time professional football at Leeds United and was also a Northern Ireland International.
